Ricky, jeune orphelin, vit dans un centre de rééducation à Guadalajara, où il a été placé après avoir volé sa grand-mère, puis ouvert la cage des oiseaux. Un matin, Cepillín, le clown le plus célèbre du Mexique, vient donner un spectacle au centre de rééducation. Fasciné, Ricky se prend à rêver d'un autre destin et décide de fuguer pour rejoindre Mexico et devenir clown. À la croisée des chemins entre fiction et documentaire, ce film de Reichenbach nous cueille là où l'on ne s'y attend pas : dans notre âme d'enfant. Le voyage de Ricky dépasse la simple quête d'un métier. L'enfant fait plus de mille kilomètres pour retrouver Cepillín, dans un parcours initiatique, où une question profonde se pose en filigrane : avons-nous gardé notre part d'enfant ? Son périple l'amène à vivre mille expériences : une fête traditionnelle, une procession, un match de "lucha libre", la rue et ses enfants voleurs, une fillette qui l'entraîne au zoo, à la fête foraine et au cirque. Mais lorsqu'il retrouve enfin Cepillín, tout n'est pas si simple. Le célèbre clown doute. Enfermé trois jours, incapable d'exercer son art, il confie : « J'ai perdu ma voix d'enfant, je ne fais plus rire. » C'est à travers un voyage commun, ponctué d'échanges dans des lieux empreints de poésie — un monastère, le tronc creux d'un vieil arbre millénaire — que chacun cherche à retrouver ce qui lui manque. Ricky, son rire. Cepillín, sa foi en son métier. Et au bout du chemin, l'enfant est enfin prêt à devenir clown. Grimé par Cepillín, il monte sur scène, d'abord en extérieur, puis sous le chapiteau du cirque. The child travels more than a thousand kilometres to find Cepillín, in an initiatory journey, where a profound question runs as an undercurrent: have we kept our childhood self? His trek leads him through a thousand experiences: a traditional celebration, a procession, a lucha libre match, the street and its child thieves, a little girl who takes him to the zoo, to the funfair, and to the circus. But when he finally finds Cepillín, things are not so simple. The famous clown doubts. Locked away for three days, unable to practise his art, he confides: "I have lost my child's voice, I can no longer make people laugh." It is through a shared journey, punctuated by exchanges in places imbued with poetry, a monastery, the hollow trunk of an ancient thousand-year-old tree, that each seeks to recover what he is missing. Ricky, his laughter. Cepillín, his faith in his calling. And at the end of the road, the child is finally ready to become a clown. Made up by Cepillín, he takes to the stage, first outdoors, then under the big top of the circus. A touching, poetic, and inspiring film, carried by magnificent shots of sacred Mexico and by the questions this little orphan raises about the circus, notably this one: why keep wild animals in cages?
